A Megabot fighting against several players.
The Megaboss Battle is a gamemode in which one TX-1 robot fights against 10-30 lower tier robots, from T6 to T10. It always takes place in the Hellion Impact Crater. It takes massive amounts of skill and luck to win as a MegaBoss.
The Megaboss player can play this gamemode only every 8 hours. The rules of the MegaBoss battle are similar to those of the Challenge Battle, the only difference being that the megabot always fights without any helpers.
Current issues[]
Due to technical difficulties and unexpected server problems, Boss Battles have been rationed to 1 battle every 8 hours. This may not be the intended time slot for boss battles and will be reduced down once the current issues being experienced with boss mode are fixed. The original intended wait time between boss battles was meant to be 20 minutes, and fluctuate depending on server population, yet this goal has not been changed.
Only players playing classic mode will currently play against the megabosses, however freejam is working on making a special new gamemode for megabots, so they can fight people in regular battle mode.
Matchmaking[]
When a Mega Bot starts a Boss Battle, the Robocloud matchmaking algorithms select a number of suitable candidate low tier robots to challenge them.
- Mega Bots robots sign up for a Boss Battle
- Low tier robots sign up for a classic match
Battle set-up[]
At the start of the match The Mega Bot is spawned in the top-right corner of the map, on a capture point. The boss's enemies are spawned in the opposite corner spread in a large circle.
The number of low tier robots put against the boss robot is based on the total robot rating of the boss, so bots with more Robot Ranking will have more and higher ranked robots pitted against them. The exact relationship is controlled by the Robocloud. Robocloud will improve the balance over time by watching the outcome of boss battles, matching the Boss and Enemy Team by Robot Rank but with Platoons and numbers taken into account to improve balancing.
Boss Robot[]
A Boss Robot or just Boss is a Mega Bot robot that has been chosen by its user to participate in a Boss Battle.
- A Boss Battle can be played by the boss only once in 8 hours.
- Boss robots currently use a player's Tier TX-1 design.
Victory Conditions[]
The TX-1 robot will win if:
- The timer runs out.
- All enemies are eliminated.
The Lower-Tier Robots will win if:
- The Megabot is defeated.
- They succeed in base capturing.
Strategies[]
Megabot[]
Basics[]
Always stay in cover and route enemies into the paths that you prefer them to go in; a combination of large numbers and unpredictability allow them to quickly swarm and disarm you. Do not sit still as this will encourage them to do so.
Let the enemies come to you, the time is against them.
Always watch the skies and shoot fliers. They will generally come down very easily.
Plasma robots do the most damage to you, so shoot them first. Medics should also be a priority.
You must try and make people spread out so you can kill the team more easily. Though you have more damage, the other side has greater DpS.
Your bot is significantly more powerful than a single bot of their tier. You can use this to your advantage at the start by attacking a single player in a preferred direction while moving towards them. This will give you some breathing room, and take out at least a few bots before they manage to organize themselves into groups. This often allows you to score a kill on particularly brazen scouts, as well.
Mega Boss Design[]
Mega boss robot design needs peculiar attention in comparison to standard mega bots
First and foremost, never use plasma on a mega boss. You will assuredly lose, unless there are no enemy units that can fly.
Having many foes will lead to high DpS. Beside having an obviously well-armored robot, having at least 3 redundant guns and at least 6 wheels is highly recommended. Due to their small damage per shot, they will not immediately go for anything other than your vital areas. A lost match will normally end with a very intact mega bot rolling away, gunless, from a swarm of attacking bots.
TX-1 electroplates are almost unbreakable for their low-damage weapons. A poor design could, however, lead to the anchor block being destroyed. If your design cannot cross-protect or triforce the anchor, it is better to add a lot of standard armor instead of consuming pFlops with 1 piece of armor easily taken out by plasmas.
Being agile is very important, agility allows a mega bot to jump behind cover without getting stuck or destroyed on the way. Building a mega bot relatively light is normally best.
If the pilot seat or the block its mounted on is exposed, a mega bot is at risk for a quick kill. Open topped pilot seats are very vulnerable even from T6 fliers with plasma launchers and nano-disruptors.
Low-Tier Robots[]
Try to surround the Megabot. The confusion can quickly become overwhelming as they cannot fire in multiple directions.
First thing is to group right away and to not separate from the group unless you are scouting or hidden among the cliffs in a flying craft.
The mega boss can only destroy a bot if they are on it for a few seconds. Staying in a groups allows you to damage the Boss when they are attacking. This strategy is akin to salmon swimming upstream. Some will inevitably be eaten by bears. However, a medic can heal a barely-living bot making the comparison moot.
Lanchester's Square Law: your team will have a DpS advantage until your numbers are reduced. The small DpS of your team's guns will, when combined, quickly surpass the mega bot's DpS.
Shoot the Megabot's GUNS FIRST. Wheels are second. Their armor laughs at anything else.
Distraction Capture[]
Preparation: split into small groups, a weaker capture group with one medic, a support group (snipers, floaters, scouts and bombers), and the stronger, distracting group.
Taken to action: have the support group get into their positions, and start deploying the distraction on one side of the map (the same side as where the bosses are traveling), the capture group SHOULD NOT start to get to the base until the scouts or any bot can spot the boss(es). Once they are aware of the locations, then the capture group can move over the cliffs and on the side opposite to where the bosses travel. Once the capture group starts to capture the base, all bots NEED to watch the minimap and the locations of the boss(es) so they can be ready to retaliate and hold the ground. When this happens, the hovers, fliers and bombers can now really help to defend the capping group with the medic(s) behind, healing them.
What not to do[]
What many players do in their first few mega boss battles is to charge in, guns blazing. This is the fastest way to getting ripped to shreds. You need to stay in the outer perimeter of the map, group up in small to medium groups, and then shoot at the boss from the perimeter from all sides. Charging in is not a good idea as the boss will easily out gun your lower tier robot. Only by playing smart and using teamwork can the boss be defeated.
NEVER shoot as the capture group because the boss will turn towards you and now attack both groups before you can even see the base.
