Aerofoils (or, more casually, wings) are the main form of movement block for plane-like bots, providing both lift and control within a single component.

In order to make a bot fly using aerofoils, it is necessary to install several thrusters to provide the force required to get airborne. This is essential as aerofoils themselves have no built-in means of propulsion.

Constructing an Aircraft Edit

To construct a plane of any variety, you should take in to account what control variety you are looking for, which could be:

  • High agility at the cost of speed and stability (Not recommended for novice flyers).
  • Stability at the cost of agility (Recommended for all flyers; more experienced pilots can attempt more intricate builds).

Either of the above options is viable, assuming you can control them. It is worth noting that flying does require PRACTICE and will not be easy to start with.

Once you have chosen which plane type you wish to build, you can begin construction.

Stable Aircraft Edit

Positioning is key to all plane-based bots in Robocraft, as it determines both balance and maneuverability. In regards to stable, easier-to-fly aircraft, it is recommended to construct a bot as follows:

  1. Begin with a 3x3 square at the front. This is where most of your propulsion will go.
  2. Extend backwards from this square, keeping the 3x3 dimensions, for as long as you wish. Shorter bots will be harder for snipers and SMG aircraft to hit. A minimum length of 6 blocks is required to fit the necessary parts.
  3. Once you are done extending, break out the corners of your front face. Place a set of 4 thrusters of any tier desired into the gaps, vents facing backwards (so they will propel you forward). Do NOT use thrusters of any tier under Mk 3 as they will not be powerful enough to keep you in the air.
  4. On the left and right cubes of your front face, place an aerofoil. Make sure to face it the correct way (see image below).
  5. At the back of your bot (for 6-cube length builds), place either two more aerofoils or two rudders in line with your front components. These are required for stability.
  6. On top of your bot, right at the back, place a rudder. This will allow for lengthways stability, helping to keep your aircraft upright.
  7. Proceed to place your pilot seat somewhere in the center of the plane. It can be placed on top, however this is ill-advised as SMG planes will take you down very quickly.
  8. Feel free to edit the aircraft as desired from this point on. Try to maintain balance. If needed, place more thrusters in equal amounts on different sides of the plane (this will help with natural lift and drop when flying). Regardless of stability, rail cannons and nano disrupters are NOT recommended, but plasma launchers and SMGs are fine.

Agile AircraftEdit

Agile aircraft are the preferred aircraft of choice for Interceptors (a.k.a. SMG planes), due to their dogfighting capabilities. The process to create them is quite similar to stable aircraft, with some notable exceptions that have been italicized:

  1. Unlike stable aircraft, a 3x3 square is NOT required. As long as the aircraft can have an aerofoil on each side, the front face is fine.
  2. Extend back as far as you like. The 6-cube minimum may or may not apply, depending on if you want a 2-wing or 4-wing design.
  3. As before, place an aerofoil on each side of the front face.
  4. Now, the thrusters here must be placed BEHIND the aerofoils. This is what provides most of the agility. If you are doing a two-wing design, skip ahead to Step 6.
  5. Place either a pair of aerofoils or rudders at the rear of the plane. Remember to make sure they are in line with the front components.
  6. Install a rudder on the top of the plane, centered to maintain control. If you want additional control and are using a 4-wing design with rudders at the rear, you can place another rudder on the underside. This will give you four rudders arranged in a + on the back of your bot, which can boost control.
  7. Place your pilot seat where desired and edit away. Please note that for agile aircraft, unless you are very experienced, you should only be using SMGs.

Notes Edit

  • Aerofoils have a maximum drag speed. This limits how fast your thrusters will allow you to go.
  • Aerofoils and rudders are the first targets any opponent will go for. Make sure to continuously be on the move to make it difficult for snipers to take you down, as the loss of any of your winged components will likely ground you (watch out for Interceptors, though).
  • Addition of armour and electroplates can strengthen your aircraft, but will increase drag too. This will slow you down and make you less agile.
  • Adding armour or electroplates is dependent on what sort of craft you have. For Bombers (i.e. plasma users), if you are unable to fly upside down or your bot is physically unable to fly upside down, focus on increasing armour on top of your plane as protection from Interceptors. For Interceptors, focus on bottom armour and forward armour, as you are likely to cop hits from both planes you are fighting and enemies on the ground.
  • As a general rule, reinforcing the bottom of your plane is highly recommended. If you are capable of flying upside down, reinforcing it is even more important, as you would then have a defense against Interceptors.
  • It is possible to fly using only rudders by replacing all aerofoils used with rudders. This requires a bit of fine-tuning but makes defending your winged parts easier.
  • Making crazy designs is a common strategy for aircraft; this usually makes them either unbalanced or highly vulnerable to enemy fire, so be careful when designing a bot.
